Industrial Digital Twins Expert Committee

Overview

The Digital Twins Technical Committee has been initiated under the aegis of the French Solutions Industrie du Futur initiative, piloted by CORI2DF. Since late 2020, it brings together a significant panel of industrial and academic actors to advance the topic of digital twins. Since June 2026, it is hosted and sponsored by the EDT program and its activity falls under the AT5 (Cross-Cutting Action 5 : Dissemination, Exploitation, Standardization, Education)

A Digital Twin is an organized set of digital models and data representing a real-world entity to address specific problems and use cases. It is kept up to date with the real entity, at a frequency and precision suited to its use cases, and equipped with advanced exploitation tools to understand, analyze, predict, and optimize the design, the operation and the control of the real entity.

Coordination: Olivier Scart (3DS) - Pascale Vicat-Blanc (Inria).

Objectives

The committee’s first objective was to explain what a Digital Twin is and the benefits it can bring to industrial companies — in particular SMEs — which led to a first deliverable (see Brochures below).

Following the publication of that first brochure, the committee has undertaken to:

  • Promote the Digital Twin across the French and European industrial fabric through information brochures and participation in events (conferences, trade shows, colloquia).
  • Foster exchanges with European counterparts to create synergies, such as with the International Digital Twin Association (IDTA).

The committee has then continued its work towards two new publication on the potential of to reduce the industry’s environmental impact and on the technical implementation of the Digital Twin, exploring its functional architecture, the associated challenges, and its governance.

Work Plan

The committee is now studying two topics

a) Lessons-learned review:

  • Identify the challenges and difficulties of deploying or using a DT (Digital Twin)
  • Understand the uses/challenges in terms of Circular Economy, carbon footprint, resilience, etc.
  • Identify observed best practices and produce recommendations

b) Propose a “blueprint” (roadmap) for the development and O&M (operations & maintenance) of a DT in the industry.
